Melissa Federau

My journey to becoming a therapist has been unexpected and a slow unfolding over time that came as no surprise to those around me. My inclination towards listening attentively, empathizing, creating a safe space for pain and to be a support to others has made the work of becoming a therapist a natural fit for me. Throughout my life I have seen the varying interests and passions in people’s lives that have captured their time and attention yet found my own to consistently settle on a singular passion; people.

There is a quote by Henri David Thoreau that moves me to tears and continually reminds me of my “why” in becoming a therapist. The quote says, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation, and go to the grave with the song still in them.” I believe that there is a story and a song of purpose in every person’s life that longs to be heard and validated. Yet, for so many people their experiences of inner hopelessness and pain burdens them with an experience of life that doesn’t measure up with the person they long to be. As someone who has experienced a time of deep despair and a sense of fear for her future — I can tell you that there is hope. I have, and continue to, make use of therapy for my own personal growth, healing and freedom. It is through this experience that I have encountered the profound personal transformation that occurs when a therapist, using their space, education and gifts helps a client move through their stuck places.

As a growing therapist it is my honour to journey with you as you make this personal investment in to your own life. I enjoy seeing clients of all ages and backgrounds and use somatic, systemic and attachment-based theories to inform my work. My greatest desire is that the therapy room would be a safe and inviting place where you would encounter someone who wants to know you and help you uncover your truest self so you can sing the song only you were created to sing in whatever capacity, relationship or stage of life you might be in.
